2016 Rosé - Brown Vineyard - Redwood Valley, Mendocino County
This single vineyard Rosé was made from Zinfandel grapes from the dry farmed Brown Vineyard in Redwood Valley. The vines are 80 years old. We made this wine in a classic Provençal style. Whole clusters pressed lightly and then cold fermented. It matured in neutral oak barrels for six months before bottling.
It has a beautiful light peach color and an amazing nose of peach and guava. A very refreshing wine with laser-like acidity and only 12.5% alcohol. It has a clean, long finish. As it is delicate and silky on the palate it would be ideal to pair with hors d'oeuvres, cheese, charcuterie, olives, pâté. Don't think that a Rosé can only be drunk in the summer. The 2016 Kala Rosé can be enjoyed on a cold night, accompanying a warm bouillabaisse and a baguette. A cioppino for those who have enjoyed it in San Francisco. Even with a spicy Tom Yum or a creamy clam chowder.
2014 Old Vine Grenache - Highland Vineyard - Sacramento Valley
This single vineyard Grenache is from the sustainably farmed Highland Vineyard located in the northern Sacramento Valley. The grapes on these old, gnarly, 70+ year old vines were hand-harvested in August 2014, de-stemmed and then fermented with a few gentle punch downs by hand to allow good contact with the skins. The wine was then gently pressed into barrels (20% new French oak) and allowed to mature for 18 months.
We made it in a classic Southern Rhône style. The Grenache grape has relatively light tannins and a lighter body making for a beautifully rounded mouthfeel. The Kala 2014 Old Vine Grenache has a nose that evokes red fruit - raspberry , strawberry, dried strawberry. Well balanced with soft tannins and a long peppery finish. It pairs well with pork belly, sweeter styles of barbecue, corn tamales, casseroles, and pasta with bolognese sauce.
2014 Malbec - Cadden Vineyard - Napa Valley
This single vineyard Malbec is from the sustainably farmed Cadden Vineyard located in Napa Valley. The fruit was hand-harvested September 2014, de-stemmed and fermented in open-top bins, while being gently punched down by hand twice a day. The wine was then gently pressed into barrel with 33% new French oak. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation and was gently racked by hand only twice during its 26 month aging in barrel. After bottling it was rested for a further 18 months and now ready for release.
We made this wine in a classic Bordeaux style. This 2014 Malbec has a deep purple color and is really fragrant on the nose with notes of purple fruit, black cherries and lilac. It is incredibly well balanced, with chewy, ripe tannins and excellent integration of the oak, evoking background notes of mocha and roasted coffee. There is a strong minerality to its long finish with notes of black raspberry and lilac. It pairs well with fatty cuts of steak, roasted lamb, game meats like venison and wild boar, as well as rich Indian lamb & goat curries.
2015 Sauvignon Blanc - Blau Vineyard - Knights Valley, Sonoma County
This single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is from the prestigious Blau vineyard in Knights Valley. It was whole cluster pressed and went through cold fermentation. It then matured in neutral oak barrels for six months.
This wine was made in a classic Loire style. It opens on the nose with intense notes of grapefruit, lemon and floral (lemon verbena, lemon balm), under-ripe pineapple that provide a hint of tropical. It is not grassy like the typical Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand but has a very nice herbal floral characteristic. The palate is seamless with the nose evoking grapefruit, grapefruit zest, lemon, lemon zest, lemon verbena, delicate herbs, and with the spine of stone-y, chalky mineral notes reminiscent of classic Sancerre. The Kala 2015 Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with raw oysters, crudo, sashimi, steamed mussels and light fresh flavors. It adds great nuance and refreshes the palate while enjoying goat and sheep cheese and light mediterranean food.
2013 Malbec - Cadden Vineyard - Napa Valley
This single vineyard Malbec is our inaugural vintage. The Malbec grapes were hand-picked from the sustainably farmed Cadden Vineyard located in Napa Valley. The fruit was de-stemmed and fermented in open-top bins, while being gently punched down by hand twice a day. The wine was then gently pressed into barrel with 33% new French oak. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation and was gently racked by hand only twice during its 24 month aging in barrel. After bottling, it was rested for a further 12 months before release.
We made this wine in a classic Bordeaux style. This 2013 Malbec has a deep purple color and is alluring on the nose with notes of dark cassis, plums and hints of black pepper and vanilla. The palate unfolds with complex flavors of cassis, blackberry, oak spices, with a firm backbone of rounded tannins and a long finish.
It is ready to savor alongside lamb shank, filet mignon, beef and venison bourguignon, goat curry and Jamaican oxtail.
The label on this bottle is a hand-drawn re-interpretation of vintage Bordeaux wine labels to reflect on the old world style of food friendly wines that is the Kalā ethos.
